How to Become a Commercial Pilot in India

Becoming a commercial pilot in India is a structured process regulated by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). It is not just a dream. It is a defined pathway with clear eligibility rules, medical standards, theory exams, and required flying hours.

What Is a Commercial Pilot License (CPL)?

A Commercial Pilot License (CPL) allows you to fly professionally and work with airlines, charter operators, or cargo companies. Without a CPL, you cannot be employed as a commercial pilot.

The progression typically follows:

CPL is awarded after completing required exams, medical clearances, and 200 hours of flying.

Eligibility Criteria

To become a commercial pilot in India, you must:

  • Complete 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics
  • Score at least 50% in these subjects
  • Be minimum 17 years for SPL and 18 years for CPL
  • Clear DGCA Class 2 and Class 1 medical examinations
  • Be proficient in English

Students from Arts or Commerce can qualify by completing Physics and Mathematics through NIOS.

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Complete 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics
  2. Clear DGCA Class 2 Medical
  3. Obtain DGCA Computer Number
  4. Join a DGCA-approved Flying Training Organisation (FTO)
  5. Clear CPL theory exams (Air Navigation, Meteorology, Air Regulations, Technical subjects, RTR)
  6. Complete 200 hours of flying (including solo, cross-country, night, instrument, and multi-engine flying)
  7. Pass the CPL skill test
  8. Apply for CPL through the eGCA portal

After CPL, most candidates add Multi-Engine Rating (MER), Instrument Rating (IR), and later complete Type Rating (A320 or B737) based on airline selection.

  • Total estimated cost: ₹45–65 lakhs
  • Type Rating (post-CPL): ₹15–25 lakhs

  • Captain (Domestic): ₹8–15 lakhs per month
  • International Captain: ₹15 lakhs+ per month

Some students choose a BSc Aviation degree alongside CPL training. This provides a UGC-recognised qualification and a backup career pathway in aviation management while progressing toward a pilot career.
